Your Girlfriend's Favorite DJ

Before DJ Zeke ran St. Johns' campus, the go-to-kid was DJ Spynfo. Nowadays, St. Johns' former favorite crowd pleaser is on a global climb to the top. College Love recently sat down with the man they call The College Club King.

"I'm living my dream, I don't plan on stopping for anybody, or anyone"-DJ SPYNFO

CH: What's your full name? What's Your age and where are you from?
SPYNFO: My name is Michael Eagon, I'm 26 and I'm from the Bronx.
CH: Where'd the name Spynfo come from?
SPYNFO: Spynfo came from St. John's in Montgoris. I was trying to develop a name that had to do with spinning records. A lot of DJ's don't have names that have to do with their craft. "Oochie wally" by Nas was a hot track at the time. There's a line in the song that goes, "holler out the window, it's the project nympho," and we just added Spynfo to it. It was a name that described who I was, a person addicted to DJ'ing.
CH: Since St. John's what have you been up to?
SPYNFO: I graduated in 06' I've been hosting concerts, various venues with artists like: Keyshia Cole, Luda, Nas, and Lupe. I've been to Canada, Tokyo, and I just got back from Brazil. I've been DJ'ing corporate functions for organizations like the National Black Accountants, and the American Cancer Society. I've been trying to expand and be everywhere at once. I did rap-city and I do various private events like weddings and proms. I also have various mixtapes for download at djspynfo.net. I have a syndicated college radio show, it's the first black & latino owned syndicated college radio show, called "Live From da Yard", I co-host and DJ. It's heard from NY to Minnesota, we have about a million listeners. I also co-founded the Y.E.S. group (Young Entrepreneurs Speak) it's a community based organization about uplifting young entrepreneurial minds, giving them incite about being self driven.
CH: I heard your a big dog pitbull on Hot 97 now, how'd that come about?
SPYNFO: I'm not on Hot 97 yet, but I'm affiliated with a team that runs Hot 97. Bobby Trends and Mr. Cee had been keeping their eye on me the last 2-3 years. They saw how I dominated the college crowds, saw how I progressed and the way I marketed myself got their attention. They wanted to create the next generation of Pitbulls: people that are on the scene, cater to all, great DJ, and that's where I came in. Mr. Cee was speaking to me for quite some time and he hit me up told me to come to Hot 97 . All the Pitbulls were there, they inaugurated us. They gave us the option to make our decision there or go home and think it over but we all made our decision there. It was kind of like getting your PHD for a DJ, it's all about using it now. This was a good moment in my life.
CH: How'd you get started DJ'ing?
SPYNFO: Back at St. John's in 2000, my freshman year. I moved into Hollis with what little equipment I had. I had bought turntables before I came to school. An Alpha heard me playing and told me to DJ a Haraya event, it was a day mixer. I did a great job, and word got out I DJ'ed and I was good and other orgs. started to eventually utilize me. My first party was at a club/bar called Georgetown's on Hillside. I had that locked in for 2 years, Thurs. and Fridays. That's how I started to get my name out there, I was packing out parties , 3-400 people every week.
CH: When'd you realize you might actually make it as a DJ?
SPYNFO: I did a show in Maryland with Suede and I utilized the mic. Thats when I actually became "Spynfo" getting the crowd involved. Asian parents, black kids, me by myself made the show move in 2004.
CH: What was the best party you've DJ'ed?
SPYNFO: A party in Japan by far. It was 07' the fact was I wasn't expecting these asians to know so much hip-hop, reggae, and soca. I kept them moving all night, security had to push the crowd out. They wanted one more song. Now my poster is up next to 50 cent and Kanye at this club called Vueonos.
CH: What DJ's do you look up to?
SPYNFO: Mr. Cee, for the way he controls the crowd. Cypha sounds, because he cracks jokes and turns it into a comedy show. DJ Camillo, for his style he keeps the crowd moving and doesn't stop, and he is very diverse. Funk Flex, because he is the godfather of Pitbulls and he took DJ'ing and made himself a millioniare getting involved in a lot of endeavors.
CH: Do you have any other jobs?
SPYNFO: This is my 9-5, my main thing. This and investing in stock. My goal is to start my own business. My goal is to land a spot on Hot 97, the sky is the limit after that, I'll be in my own Spynfo-world.
CH: What do you think about College Love Ent?
SPYNFO: It's headed in the right direction, it's real vivd and seems user friendly. It has a large array of events and is tryung to bring the love back to the college campus. There are a lot of good features.
CH: What was the best St. John's party you've DJ'ed?
SPYNFO: An outdoor summer luau that turned into madness. It was hot there was water fights and everything. Parties in the U.C. and Montgoris were all great parties but they didn't stand out like this party in the res. village.
CH: I've heard you shout out your nicknames, what are all of them?
SPYNFO: The College Club King, Spynfo the Nympho, Big Dog Pitbull, St. Johns' finest and your girlfriend's favorite DJ. Spynfo just rhymes with nympho and it makes people understand what Spynfo means. I do like ladies but I'm not going crazy about it.
CH: How much do you make on average from DJ'ing?
SPYNFO: When I was St. Johns' finest $3-500 a gig now that I stepped it up checks can range anywhere from $500-2,500.
CH: What shows do you have coming up?
SPYNFO: STJ Spring concert, Stoney Brook, Fordham, Columbia and Pace's senior formals. In 2 months I'm headed to Hiroshima & Tokyo, Japan. Aand I have various: celeb. birthdays and I'm working with Swizz Beats, J. Holliday, Serani etc.
CH: Are you able to spin for a wide variety of races?
SPYNFO: I spin for all sorts of crowds depending on where I'm at. Haraya is the main org. that booked me. When I was in Brazil I played for everyone.
CH: Define success
SPYNFO: Success is when your'e comfortable with who you are, what you're doing and you're bank account. Those three things come together, that's success for me. I'm becoming successful I have a lot more control over my life and the direction I'm taking it.
CH: What advice would you give an upcoming DJ?
SPYNFO: When you start off it isn't good to run with too many DJ's, competing with other DJ's isn't the best way to get noticed. Practice makes perfect. Perfect your craft, know your music and know your audience. Prepare yourself for any given situation, learn pop, techno, house and latin.
CH: What's your relationship with DJ Zeke? Was there ever any problems between you two seeing that you were St. John's favorite DJ before him?
SPYNFO: There is a time and place for everything. I was basically doing what he's doing now. He's taking it to another level, I did less orgs. he's dealing with a lot more. I don't really want to be St. John's DJ for the next 20 years. Zeke will find himself doing bigger and larger events. I've been there done that. I'll always have love for STJ. I look at Zeke as a younger version of me, I told Zeke it's how you sell yourself, you've got to get people to like you first. Zeke is good with first and lasting impressions, he's wholesome.
CH: Are you still St. John's favorite DJ?
SPYNFO: I doubt it. I'm not there enough. But if I was I would be lol. Right now I'm doing a lot of schools like Yale, Buffalo, Albany.
CH: So you still DJ at schools. What schools do you DJ at?
SPYNFO: Albany, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Fordham, Suny New Paltz, Fairfield, Suny Purchase. Every school in the tri state area has welcomed me. I made the move from being "St. John's finest to all schools welcoming me on campus as " King"
CH: What would it take for you to DJ at St. John's again?
SPYNFO: A phone call.
CH: What was it like when you were on campus as a student?
SPYNFO: Everyday all day there was a party in the dorms and in the lounges, open mic. sessions in Hollis and Century hall and I would DJ. STJ was a little less stringent with the rules, you could get away with more. I made it a party school, I was the DJ they had easy access to, getting the event on campus hype!
CH: What's the craziest thing that you've seen while DJ'ing?
SPYNFO: The first time I dropped a techno track at Amazura. It was an urban crowd and when you play a track totally unexpected and still get a response that's crazy. But the craziest thing would have to be when I had 40,000 people partying and doing the wave at Giant stadium. It was an annual college football game and bands were battling and everything.
CH: What's one thing that makes you unique?
SPYNFO: I'm one of those DJ's at my own party I'm not shy on the dance floor. I'm on the dance floor trying to get it in. People get to know me that way and they realize I'm a regular dude that's trying to have some fun and make some money at the same time.

Flyer Than The Rest Of Them

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

If you take a close look at most of the flyers for parties being thrown, on or around St. Johns' campus you will notice the signature, Art Boy Cali designs. But who exactly is the man behind the hot designs on the flyers? College Love recently sat down with the artist, to get the full picture.

Photobucket

"The harder I work the more I get paid, and it shows"-Art Boy Cali

CH: For those that may just know you by, ArtBoyCali what's your full name? Where are you from? What's your age and your major?
CALI: My full name is Carl Elie, and I am 19 years old from Roxbury, MA. I'm a graphic design major.
CH: It seems like you do a lot, what have you been doing recently?
CALI: Recently I've been doing a lot of public relations for school organizations. Promoting, graphic design work.
CH: What got you interested in making flyers?
CALI: I started in high school. I've always been an artist. I had an internship at Massachusetts Art College, and it really took off from there. I was fascinated with photoshop. It was a challenge I wanted to conquer.
CH: What do you want to do in life?
CALI: I want to do motion graphics. Storyboard layouts for music videos. Motion graphics is taking an image and putting it in motion, motion-graphics. Sort of like the T-Pain and Ludacris, "Chopped and Screwed" video. I would also like to continue making flyers and web designing.
CH: Out of all the things you do, what's your favorite?
CALI: Designing, I make about three designs a day. Whenever I come across a picture I like I am influenced to make it extra.
CH: What was the best party you've been too since you've been at St. John's?
CALI: The best party I went to would have to be the Get Wet Anniversary. I got to meet people from all walks of life, I met Ryan Leslie, and DJ Enuff, it was a real diverse party.
CH: What was the best party you've thrown?
CALI: My first party, the pajama party at Deriver night club. I was able to take an event that was supposed to be at a house and we sold the first floor of Deriver out by 1:30-2:00 a.m.
CH: Are you the hottest flyer maker on campus?
CALI: Definitely! I don't degrade anyone else's work, I just feel since it's a passion of mine I take more consideration. I never sell anyone short, and I always do flyers to my best ability.
CH: What do you think about the site www.CollegeLoveEnt.com?
CALI: Brilliant idea, I like the name a lot it's catchy. Definitely something that can take off, a lot of people should definitely look into it. There's a lot of promotion for me without me even having to ask.
CH: What was the first flyer you did for a party?
CALI: The first flyer I ever made would have to be when I used to DJ, it was for my own event, "A Night Called New Tings A Gwan". My first flyer for a St. John's event was for the Guyanese Student Association, "The Red & White Affair", I also was the DJ for that event.
CH: I heard you DJ also, how come we havent seen you spin at any parties recently?
CALI: Art is my passion. Being a DJ is a hobbie, my passion is more lucrative than my hobbie. If it comes down to it I can and will.
CH: How much have you made off of your flyer business. Which one of your hustles makes you the most money, and how much do you make from it?
CALI: I do 2-3 flyers a week at a charge of about $50-$70. On average I am making $1,000 every 3 months, sometimes more or less.
CH: I noticed you advertise for Boston and New York, do you have many customers up there? Are you doing your thing in two states right now?
CALI: Yes I do work in Boston, I'll never forget where I came from. Thats my home, I interned for a radio station (102.9 Choice) I designed flyers for DJ's in Boston, and did logos and flyers. I still have customers in Boston.
CH: Where else do you work?
CALI: New England to New York. Which includes Rhode Island, Mass. and all of the borough's in NY.
CH: What exactly is Oh Gawd TV, and what are your goals for that?
CALI: It's under production. I wouldn't release anything without it being to my liking. I had actually came up with this idea around the same time CollegeLoveEnt. came out. It is interactive promotion. I've taken my networks and moved promotion to a place everyone can access, youtube. Other representatives and I take pictures of parties and rate parties. We let the audience viewers on youtube, myspace, and facebook know about what promoters are up and coming and who is falling off. In a nutshell, if your a viewer you'll see the flyer for the party, you'll see footage and pictures and feedback. You'll get what you missed out if you didn't go to the party.
CH: Where'd you come up with the name Art Boy Cali?
CALI: It's a funny story, when I started getting better and I declared myself a freelance graphic designer I had to identify my skills as solely me. I'm not an entertainment or a corporation, it's just me. I was able to come up with a creative name that will stick with me forever. Art Boy Cali comes from my mom. Me being the only child and only boy and art being my passion, it's what my mom helped me build. Yes, my mom sees most of my flyers.
CH: What events are you promoting coming up?
CALI: Caribbean Students Association's "Dance battle", it's at St. John's on March 26th. and the "Get Wet Anniversary" the date for that is T.B.A.
CH: What upcoming projects do you have?
CALI: I'm falling back on Oh Gawd TV, making sure it runs correctly. I won't let that idea go to waste. It will really make people say Oh Gawd if I let it go to waste.
CH: I heard you used to be apart of Get Wet, are you still affiliated or what happened?
CALI: I never wasn't affiliated. I started on Oct. 28th, but for a while I just fell back from promoting to focus on art and school work. My friend Jay-P is the St. John's icon for Get Wet, after working with him since I was a freshmen he introduced me to them. We're not a street team, and we're not your common promotions team, we are something bigger and better. I'm excited to be apart of a new family.
CH: Where did the nickname Cali come from?
CALI: Carl Ellie=Cali. "r" is not pronounced at all in Boston. My mom is Bajan so the nickname would've been Carli but her accent makes it sound like Cali. I've been called Cali since age 5, since I can remember.
CH: How do you have time to do all of these things and your school work?
CALI: Not sleeping. I have a lot of ambition and I'm a go getter. It wasn't easy, my hustle was more important than school and it showed in my grades, but now I prioritize to do both and make it work.
CH: How do you define success?
CALI: It's an old saying, A-B-C "Ability-Breaks & Courage".
CH: Who do you look up to?
CALI: My biggest role model would be my mom. She's layed out the footsteps for me. She's where I get my drive from and ambition. It's always been me and her growing up, and watching her hustle, it's always been an instinct for me to do the same.
CH: Is there any competition out there in the flyer business around campus?
CALI: I don't look for competition, I look for ways to improve myself. If I come across another designer that has reached points I haven't, I reach higher.
CH: I've heard rumors you're a cocky guy is that true?
CALI: A good way to describe me would be a book. A lot of people judge me by my cover, but not a lot of people know what I'm all about. They know I'm an artist and a lot of assumptions are made off of that and my promoting. Those who really know me know that 95% of the time I'm happy and smiling. I don't believe in stress or down falls, there are times in life that are hard, but A-B-C (Ability-Breaks & Courage) is exactly how I live my life.

The V.I.P. Section

Few club Promoters have had much success on St. Johns' campus, and since the departure of a four man team by the name of Members Only, the Party scene just hasn't been the same. College Love sat down with The Members: Brian Mills, Manny Mensah, Daryl Painter, and James Bellabre to talk about the UPS and DOWNS of being the Kings of Promoting in Queens.
Photobucket

"We Nurture the Party"-Members Only

CH: How'd you guys come up with the name Members Only?
MO: I put my Members only shirt on, but it has nothing to do with the clothing brand. Manny came up with it. I felt like Members Only meant it could only be us, we all went to the same high school, a boarding school called Church Farm School in Pennsylvania, except for James. We all went to St. John's together except for Daryl who goes to York, but we all live together. We're a family so Members Only is only us.
CH: What made you guys want to start club promoting?
MO: I used to D.J. in high school, basketball games and some in college before I transferred to St. John's. But we just started with House parties and it got to big to have it at the house. The parties in the house were too crazy. That's why our house looks like this. We tried to have our first party at this club, called club backdown but it didn't work so we moved it to the house. All sorts of people came out to our parties. We used to call downstairs "Woodstock"because mostly white people would come and party downstairs. It was everybody's spot. We were the 1st people to have people inside, outside, downstairs all partying at the same time. And we had free liquor at the parties. It took days to clean up. We got cool with the cops, but they always gave us summons'. Then Brian suggested we do something different. Our first club party was at a spot called Queen of the Sea on Merrick Blvd. We called it "From the Crib to the Club". Our first club party made us realize we can make this happen. Everybody was in there.
CH: What's the craziest party you've thrown?
MO:The "Lick me like a lollipop" house party(4/17/08), everybody got food and drinks and girls got lollipops. Our most successful party was the "Pre New Years Celebration"(12/28/07) at Deriver.
CH: What are some of the benefits of being a club promoter?
MO: If you doing good money is good. It's exposure, and you get to meet people. We like to dress, keep up on our "freshness". It's like another job. Constant flow of money.
CH: I heard no one can throw a party at Deriver unless they go through you, Is that true?
MO: That's not true, we have good control over what goes on there. We've established a real good relationship with them. We have priority and they ask us about other people. We walk in there like it's nothing, long line and all.
CH: What have you been up to since graduating?
MO: (Brian)I work at a hospital., Members Only and I take pictures for Datswhatzzup.net. (Manny) T.D. Bank and Members Only, that's my life. (Daryl) Self employed & Members Only. (James) Supervisor at a mental disability center for adults & Members Only.
CH: Are you just focusing on over 21 parties now and leaving the college crowd alone?
MO: For the most part because we're transitioning to the city. Our crowd dragged us to the city. 21 crowd is harder there's a lot more competition. We're old now we threw a party not too long ago at Deriver and it felt like we were chaperone's.
CH: When you were at St. John's was there any competition with other promoters? To this day is there any competition?
MO: Spynfo used to throw parties. Nobody else was really doing it at St. John's. But in the city there is a lot of competition, we're small fish in the city. People like showcase ent. and Empire ent. they throw like 3 or 4 parties a week to our 2 a month. But our hope is to make this a full time gig. We are a business.
CH: Have you guys made it big you think?
MO: Queens, locally, yea we are 1 of the top. All-around crowd and experience, everybody has fun at our parties. Through 07-08 We had the most popular parties in Queens. If you ask people that went to a Members Only party they'll tell you, they always have a good time.
CH: How much are you making from this?, in a year? and for a night?
MO: On average anywhere from $8,000-$9,000 a night. For the year on average about $60,000 a year before expenses.
CH: What other colleges do/did you promote for other than St. John's and what boroughs?
MO: Last year we hit up York, Old Westbury, Kingsborough college, Brooklyn College, Stony Brook, C.W. Post, Adelphi, Albany. Basically any school in a 20 mile radius.
CH: St. John's is kind of quiet with the party scene right now, would you ever come back?
MO: I want to come back. We're trying to do something new, opening new doors. We feel too old handing out flyer's to students. On special occasions we'll be back.
CH: House parties or club parties, which do you like better?
MO: House parties are easier, it's house rules. We don't have to worry about clubs. It's less work but less profitable.
CH: I heard some of you or one of you was a dancer, do you still dance? How'd you become a club promoter from being a dancer?
MO: I was a dancer, I was involved in orgs. like C.S.A., A.S.A., and I did fashion shows when I was at St. John's. I was always dancing to reggae. Dancing helped and put me out there. I'm the African that could dance to the Caribbean music.
CH: So, what are the worst things that have happened to you guys since you started?
MO: We have 3 stories...

  • Polish Hall, the Expectations were high! Spynfo had come to us about having a party together with him, because we both had planned separate parties for the weekend. So we were already on a roll with the hot parties and just about to start our peak. It costed us $8,000 to throw the party and we promoted everywhere, the last three prior parties at this place were hot. Polish Hall (Hempstead, Long Island) could fit 800 people and we charged $20 at the door. We had Collie Buddz D.J., Mr. Vegas D.J. it was planned to be crazy. But the week before a fight broke out, people started fighting to Haitian music. So Nassau cops said only 300-400 people could come and we couldn't cancel the party. We took a big loss that night.
  • Then, we had a Pajama party at the Chinese spot across from Duncan Donuts. We brought the D.J. we brought the bar. It rained like crazy,(90% of the time we have a party it rains, it means we're going to have a good party) and we had a decent crowd. We let the party go on after security had left for 20 more minutes. The next thing we know a girl came and said someone just robbed y'all box. Brian had a nervous breakdown. We lost about 3-5 thousand dollars that night.
  • The Overnight celebrity party at Deriver. We spent a lot of money on promotion. I Love Members Only t-shirts. It was Brian's birthday. James told these dudes they couldn't get in they weren't dressed right for the club. They left, came back, and tried to shoot James. James got hit with a bullet in his back, that is actually still there.

CH: What parties do you guys have coming up?

MO: Every 1st Friday, club villa in the city. March 20th we're in the city, and April 24th we're back at Deriver for the "St. John's concert" after-party.

"In this game you're going to lose a lot of money, and make a lot of money, like the stock market. One day we're trying to get to the point where it's constant. "-Members Only

Big Man On Campus

CollegeLove's own, DJ Zeke sits down to talk about the past, present, and future & of course becoming St. John's favorite D.J.

Photobucket

CH: What's your full name for those who don't Know you like that?
ZEKE: Ezekiel Akinyemi, and I'm 24 years old born and raised in Staten Island, Parkhill projects, but I live in Queens Village.
CH: What artists do you listen to?
ZEKE: Nas, I respect Jay-z, I respect Puff Daddy and I respect Lupe.
CH: What DJ's do you look up to?
ZEKE: Mister Cee, as a DJ he's amazing and DJ Enuff, is very cool and down to earth. Definitely, Grand Master Flash and Kool Herc, I got to meet both of them.
CH: What projects are you working on now?
ZEKE: Origins of Hiphop II is going to be a very big project of mine, it should be done in the next 2 to 3 weeks. And Best of the borough's, which is the top 2 or 3 artists from each boroughs.
CH: How long have you been DJing?
ZEKE: 10 years going on 11
CH: What is it about DJing that makes you want to continue, what drives you?
ZEKE: PASSION, I love DJing but I hate parties. I hate the grinding and alcohol. I have conviction. Sometimes I feel like its not what I was destined to do . I feel more comfortable sitting by myself then around a whole bunch of people.
CH: What schools do you currently DJ at?
ZEKE: Maramount, Hofstra, Stoney Brook, Adelphi, St. John's, York College, C.W. Post, City College, Brooklyn College, Pace University. I do more parties at York college than St. John's, and Pace University pays real good.
CH: What's a typical day of enjoyment for you?
ZEKE: Watching a movie at home and being with my family.
CH: What are your goals for the future?
ZEKE: Finish graduate school at Queens College, I'm getting my degree in Liberal Arts going into communication. When I finish school and I make it I want to buy my parents another house in Nigeria because my parents have given me everything. I look up to my parents both have Masters degrees. I would also like to find a woman that completes me, not just a word but a full sentence.
CH: What was the best party you've ever DJ'ed at?
ZEKE: Amazurra 2 years ago, Fat man Scoop was there, Spynfo too and we all rocked out it was packed to capacity 2,200 people.
CH: Best party at St. Johns?
ZEKE: All of the Orientation parties I did (in Montgoris) they were poppin.
CH: Where'd you get your start at DJing?
ZEKE: I started when I was 13 in a choir , Belrose Assembly of God. The choir director felt like I couldn't sing so she made me do the sound board and just press play. It was a stepping stone for a lot of things I do. My official first party was a sweet 16 party for a girl from church.
CH: What was your first party on STJ campus?
ZEKE: My first party on campus was in Dasilva Hall 4th floor. That was the party that got my buzz on campus going. I also did these underground parties in the U.C. that public safety didn't even know about, this was like 3 years ago.
CH: What's some good advice you've recieved over the years?
ZEKE: You can't have everybody in this world like you, you can try. But for every person that likes you, there's 2 people that hate you and 1 person does it in secret.
CH:What's something someone may not know about you?
ZEKE: In 2001 I went on a mission trip with my Church. It was kinda my first experience as a missionary, there was 18 of us on the trip including my sister. We went to Malawi(Southeast Africa) Malawi is so poor it's a real eye opening experience. They thought I knew their language. I got the chance to perform for the kids, a friend and I dressed up as clowns and they chased us around these large fields and we made them balloon animals, some of the balloons broke and just to have a piece of rubber the kids were so happy, that brought a tear to my eye. They treated us like celebrities, this world is so small but everbody treats it like it's so big.
CH: Is there any competition?
ZEKE: I see young kids coming up, Kolin Mendez a.k.a. DJ Nemesis, Drew a.k.a. DJ Sour, and I always embrace them, build them up.
CH: Do you plan on retiring from St. John's in the near future?
ZEKE: Once I see someone can hold down the responsibility I will leave it in the hands of someone else. But not until I get on the radio and I've made my job.

"I don't know what it means to make it,but I guess when I get there, I will."-ZEKE
